Effects of Waste Activated Sludge Extracellular Polymeric Substances on Biosorption

چکیده
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) reportedly make up approximately half of the organic matter in activated sludge (AS), and therefore strongly influence AS properties. This study evaluated component fractions EPS normalized to volatile suspended solids (VSS) waste (WAS) from a trickling-filter-solids contact process (TF/SC) its ability biosorb raw wastewater with 30 min time. Biosorption is which (carbohydrates, proteins, humic acids, DNA, uronic lipids) sorbate, such as wastewater, sorbs onto sorbent WAS. A statistically significant correlation was found between both total concentration proteins biosorption removal soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) truly COD (ffCOD). Thus, forms can accurately be predicted by quantifying just amount WAS-associated EPS. No correlations were for colloidal (cCOD). WAS biosorbed 45–75 mg L?1 min. absorbed or stored fraction microbial products (SMP) during process. Higher concentrations acids effluent than untreated warrants further study. Longer cation exchange resin (CER) extraction times yielded more sludge: 90 ± 9, 158 3, 316 44 g?1 VSS, 45-min, 4-h, 24-h times, respectively. extracted represented only 9%, 15.8%, 31.6% respectively, raising questions about whether accurate characterization performed using typical time 45 due different rates components. It that much slowly other fractions.

Advanced sludge treatment affects extracellular polymeric substances to improve activated sludge dewatering.
The management of wastewater sludge, now often referred to as biosolids, accounts for a major portion of the cost of the wastewater treatment process and represents significant technical challenges. In many wastewater treatment facilities, the bottleneck of the sludge handling system is the dewatering operation. Advanced sludge treatment (AST) processes have been developed in order to improve s...
متن کاملExtraction of Structural Extracellular Polymeric Substances from Aerobic Granular Sludge
To evaluate and develop methodologies for the extraction of gel-forming extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), EPS from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was extracted using six different methods (centrifugation, sonication, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), formamide with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), formaldehyde with NaOH and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) with heat and constant mixing). AGS was ...
متن کاملInfluences of Extracellular Polymeric Substances on the Dewaterability of Sewage Sludge during Bioleaching
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play important roles in regulating the dewaterability of sludge. This study sought to elucidate the influence of EPS on the dewaterability of sludge during bioleaching process. Results showed that, in bioleaching system with the co-inoculation of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans TS6 and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans LX5 (A. t+A. f system), the capillary su...
متن کاملBiodegradability of biofilm extracellular polymeric substances.
This study discovered that biofilm extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are biodegradable by their own producers and by other microorganisms when they are starved. The study was performed in a comparative fashion to examine the biodegradability of biofilm EPS by the microorganisms from the original biofilm (its own producers) and from activated sludge (other microorganisms). Four distinctiv...
متن کاملComposition and distribution of extracellular polymeric substances in aerobic flocs and granular sludge.
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were quantified in flocculent and aerobic granular sludge developed in two sequencing batch reactors with the same shear force but different settling times. Several EPS extraction methods were compared to investigate how different methods affect EPS chemical characterization, and fluorescent stains were used to visualize EPS in intact samples and 20-mum ...
